Important: The law does not automatically impose a 100% tariff on India. It gives the administration the authority to impose such tariffs under specified conditions.

Reports say the legislation provides a period for countries to reduce Russian energy purchases before penalties can be applied, subject to the administrations implementation.

India has said it will protect its trade and economic interests and has reiterated that its energy decisions are guided by national interest.

At the same time, Donald Trump Jr.s Bahamas wedding festivities have come under scrutiny after ProPublica reported that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, described by ProPublica as close to Vladimir Putin, funded hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses.

The reported expenses included private-island rental and other major wedding-weekend costs.

Trump Jr. and his wife confirmed Kremlevs role, describing the spending as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.

President Trump has defended his son and said Trump Jr. would reimburse Kremlev for the expenses.

Pakistans Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with U.S. drone company Powerus covering unmanned aerial systems.

The agreement comes amid efforts to strengthen U.S.Pakistan defence and economic ties.

The deal includes an initial drone-related order, while the value and specific systems have not been publicly disclosed.

Powerus is reportedly exploring joint ventures, technology cooperation and local drone manufacturing in Pakistan.

The development is notable because China remains Pakistans dominant defence supplier, accounting for roughly 80% of Pakistans defence imports by volume, according to SIPRI data cited in the reports.

Powerus is expected to merge with Aureus Greenway Holdings, in which Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have an indirect investment through American Ventures.

Trump Jr.s spokesperson said he is a passive investor and had no involvement or prior knowledge of the Pakistan deal. Powerus executives have also said the Trump brothers have no operational role.

Pakistans military said discussions with Powerus covered defence procurement, production, emerging technologies and long-term capacity building.

The agreement could give Pakistan an additional U.S. source of drone technology alongside its longstanding defence relationship with China.

*Withdraw the proposed UPI Charges*

The Modi governments move to impose charges on UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions is an attack on ordinary people. On August 6, the government passed the bill in the Lok Sabha to allow charges on payments made through UPI apps.

This bill was passed without hearing the views of the opposition and without any debate. It was pushed through by voice vote in an authoritarian manner. Through this amendment, the government is punishing ordinary people by collecting charges from them and handing over the benefits to corporates.

*Impact on Common People*

The rulers claim that the charges will only be collected from the merchants. But in practice, any charge levied on the merchants will ultimately fall on the heads of ordinary people.

As part of the Taxation and Other Laws Amendment Bill, 2026, the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 was amended. Until now, there was a law that prohibited charging fees on UPI transactions. On August 6, the government changed that law. Now, if the government decides, charges can be imposed. Initially, reports suggest that only UPI transactions above 2,000 will attract charges of 0.30.5%.

*Digital Push*

On November 8, 2016, demonetisation was announced. The Union government claimed it would eliminate black money, corruption, and counterfeit notes. In reality, none of these problems were resolved. At the same time, the Union government pushed the people towards digitalisation, including UPI, promising that no charges would ever be imposed. That assurance led to mass adoption; however difficult it was in the initial days.

*Massive Growth*

UPI transactions grew exponentially and have been growing rapidly on a daily basis. In November 2016, in one month there were hardly 3,00,000 transactions worth 100 crore. In July 2026, this had grown to 2,366 crore transactions worth 30 lakh crore in value in a single month. This means about 79 crore transactions per day worth 1 lakh crore. Between August 2025 and July 2026, there were 24,000 crore transactions worth 330 lakh crore.

*Foreign Corporate Dominance*

The key question is who controls these transactions? Foreign corporates dominate. US based Walmart-owned PhonePe handles 50%, US based Google Pay handles 33%. Together, these two foreign corporations control 83% of UPI transactions. On the other hand, public sector bank apps like SBI Pay, PNB Pay, and Baroda M Pay barely exist in the market. Collectively, all public sector apps account for less than 1% both in number and volume. This is the design of the Modi government which is determined to develop digital payments only through foreign corporates.

*RBIs Failure to Check Monopoly*

Complaints were raised before the Reserve Bank of India about monopoly control of UPI transactions by two foreign companies. In November 2020, RBI through NPCI issued a guideline that no single company should exceed 30% of UPI transactions. But in practice, PhonePe and Google Pay continue to violate this guideline. RBI has not taken any action to restrict this monopoly; instead, it has deferred enforcement of this guideline repeatedly, now to January 2027. This exposes the utter failure of RBI to check the monopoly of foreign corporates in UPI service and reflects the BJP governments servile attitude to US imperialism.

*1.2 Lakh Crore Fee Loot*

Currently, monthly UPI transactions are worth 30 lakh crore. About 65% of these transactions in volume (20 lakh crore) are above 2,000, as per an estimate. At 0.5% MDR, the UPI charges would work out to 10,000 crore per month, and 1.2 lakh crore annually. Even at 0.3%, it would be 6,000 crore per month, and 72,000 crore annually. The main beneficiaries would be PhonePe and Google Pay, which control 83% of the total volume of UPI transactions. 

*Modi Governments Policy*

In FY202526, State Bank of India customers alone accounted for 20% of UPI transactions both in number and volume. But SBIs own app, SBI Pay, contributed hardly 0.5%. An overwhelming majority of SBI customers use PhonePe or Google Pay. Thus, despite nationalist rhetoric, the Modi governments policy has effectively promoted US based foreign corporates, presumably under US pressure.

*Could they reduce Cash Circulation?*

One stated goal of demonetisation and digital push was to reduce cash circulation. In November 2016, 18 lakh crore was in circulation, of which 15.5 lakh crore was demonetised. By January 2017, the total money circulation was pegged at 9 lakh crore after remonetisation of 6.5 lakh crore. It was claimed by the rulers that it was ideal to keep money circulation at that level comparing many advanced capitalist countries. But today, cash circulation has crossed 42 lakh crore. A major reason for this is rampant corruption and black money. A large amount of cash is hoarded and not returned for circulation. 

Another reason that contributes to the increased money circulation to a certain extent is the poor digital adoption due to lack of electricity, internet and insufficient telecommunication towers in many rural and hilly areas. This again clearly exposes the increased economic divide among the people. The Modi Government, which has failed in many aspects, has failed in curtailing money circulation also.

*Withdraw the Fee Loot*

The Modi government, in order to benefit the corporatesespecially foreign ones, has amended the law to impose charges on UPI. There is a clear move on the part of the Union Government to loot thousands of crores of rupees from the ordinary people through this amendment. The government must withdraw this amendment immediately, or the people will force it to.

*SIR & the Battle for Citizenship*

 We, the People of India

These opening words of the Constitution embody the founding principle of the Indian Republic. It underlines that sovereignty belongs to the people and that citizenship is not a privilege but the constitutional basis of membership in the Republic, carrying with it equal rights, equal dignity, and an equal say in the democratic process.

It is in this connection that the Supreme Courts clarification on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is significant. The Court made clear that the SIR is not a process for determining citizenship and that deletion of a persons name from the electoral roll does not by itself deprive that person of citizenship.  This observation made on July 17, 2026, comes at a time when attempts are being made to create linkages between electoral verification and citizenship and connected entitlements, generating legitimate apprehensions among large sections of the people.  It is another matter that the Court had earlier given its stamp of approval to the SIR exercise. 

*Two Visions of India*

The SIR exercise cannot be understood divorced from the deeper ideological contest over the idea of India. Independent India emerged from conflicting conceptions of nationhood. One found expression in the Constitution, which conceived India as a republic based on the sovereignty of its people. Every citizen, irrespective of faith, caste, or social origin, was to enjoy equal political rights.

The other concept propounded in M.S. Golwalkars We, or Our Nationhood Defined conceived India primarily as a Hindu nation where national identity was derived less from constitutional citizenship and more from cultural belonging. This distinction is fundamental. It is core to deciphering the multifarious exercises surrounding citizenship that the Modi government has undertaken in the last few years. 

According to the Constitution, citizenship is the basis of political membership. A person did not belong to the Republic because of his or her religion, caste, language, or cultural identity. Ambedkar who was also a sharp critic of competing communal conceptions of the nation, observed:

Strange as it may appear, Mr. Savarkar and Mr. Jinnah, instead of being opposed to each other on the one nation versus two nations issue, are in complete agreement about it. Both agree, not only agree but also insist that there are two nations in India one the Muslim nation and the other the Hindu nation. They differ only as regards the terms and conditions on which the two nations must live.

*Universal Franchise: The Democratic Foundation*

While Article 325 declares that no person could be ineligible for inclusion in an electoral roll on grounds only of religion, race, caste, or sex, Article 326 guarantees universal suffrage. The right to vote is therefore one of the principal means through which citizens exercise their sovereignty. 

How this exercise translates is best expressed by Rita, a sex worker. In a report in the Hindu of August 9, 2026 on the issues faced by sex workers in Delhis GB Road, Rita said that the vote made her feel equal in some sense. Despite stigma, economic deprivation and social exclusion, the fact that her vote carries the same value as that of the filthily rich and the privileged is an experience of sovereign and equal citizenship that the Constitution guarantees. 

The electoral roll is the instrument through which that right is made effective. This makes the integrity of electoral revision extremely important. While the electoral rolls must be accurate and regularly updated, it is also equally important that the process of revision ensures that genuine citizens are not arbitrarily excluded.

*Limits of Supreme Courts Clarification*

Though the Supreme Court made it clear that the Election Commission can revise electoral rolls but cannot determine citizenship, an adverse conclusion during electoral verification can have consequences that extend well beyond the electoral process. A person whose eligibility is questioned or disputed may face prolonged administrative scrutiny, legal proceedings, and uncertainty. 

The experience of Khaleda Khatun, a doctor, exemplifies this difficulty. Writing in The Indian Express of April 23, 2026, she described how she felt on discovering that her name had been placed under "adjudication" effectively making her a doubtful voter. She submitted educational qualifications, pre-Independence land deeds, and the names of her grandparents and great-grandfather, expecting the matter to be corrected. Yet, according to her account, she was declared an invalid and illegal voter even after submitting these documents.  The distinction between electoral verification and citizenship inquiry" became thin when the passport of a former editor of a prominent English daily was renewed only after it became an embarrassment for the government.

*Kagaz Nahi Dhikayenge*

Over the past decade, the country has been subjected to a series of exercises centered on citizenship, documentation, and identity. These include the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), repeated proposals for a nationwide NRC, and sustained narratives against so-called illegal infiltrators." The SIR has to be seen in this broader political context.

While each of these measures has a distinct character, taken together, they have contributed to creating an atmosphere in which citizenship is increasingly associated with documentation, verification and official scrutiny. It is not without reason that Kagaz nahi dikhayenge became a powerful expression of resistance during the anti-CAA/NRC protests.

*The Othering*

The SIR is in no small measure contributing to the othering of the minorities who are repeatedly sought to be portrayed as objects of suspicion. Muslims, particularly in border regions, view the exercise against the background of the NRC and CAA debates. Their concerns arise in an atmosphere where shrill cries of throwing out the ghuspatiya are normalized and questions of belonging and citizenship have acquired a different meaning.

Writing in The Telegraph on May 8, 2026, Yamini Aiyar makes a distinction between the experiences of a Hindu and a Muslim woman. Yamini recounted the experience of a Hindu woman in the slums of Titagarh whose daughters' names had been struck off the rolls. She says the woman was scrambling to assemble documents to prove their existence. Her exasperation was telling: A person will die just furnishing proof of their existence through documents; in death, we will have to furnish documents too. 

Aiyar noted a contrasting response among Muslims she met. Anger was a luxury they could not afford; there was instead a quiet desperation to find their way back onto the lists and to be recognized as legitimate citizens by the State.

That is what Sahida Fakirs family tried in vain. According to a report in the Indian Express of August 10, 2026 this 40 year old Bengali woman was picked up from a market in Navi Mumbai. Despite her family producing her birth certificate, school leaving certificate, her parents land deed and all other IDs available, it did not seem to be enough. Within three days of her being picked up she was pushed into Bangladesh from across the Assam border.

*The Burden of Proof*

Unlike Sahida, not everyone possesses the documents demanded. Poverty, migration, displacement, change of residence, marriage, natural disasters, etc., all affect a person's ability to produce documentary evidence. From the ration card, which used to be the all purpose document earlier, we have arrived at a stage where even the passport is categorized as humble travel document.'  It goes without saying that the burden of repeated documentation is more upon those least equipped to navigate bureaucratic procedures poor households, migrant workers, women, dalits, adivasis, religious minorities, elderly persons, and the disabled.

*Assam Foreigners Tribunal*

In another significant judgment on July 13, 2026, the Supreme Court, finding serious procedural lapses set aside a number of decisions taken by the Foreigners Tribunal in Assam. It was emphatic that proceedings involving citizenship cannot be mechanical, arbitrary, or one-sided.

This has implications beyond Assam. Citizenship lies at the foundation of civil and political rights. Proceedings that can determine whether a person is treated as a citizen must therefore conform to constitutional guarantees of fairness, reasoned decision-making, and due process. 

The experience of Assam provides an important warning. The NRC was presented as an administrative exercise to identify citizens. In practice, it became one of the largest documentary verification exercises undertaken in independent India, leading to the exclusion of more than 19 lakh people from the final register. Several crores have already been removed from the electoral rolls thanks to the SIR.

*Right to Appeal A Chimera*

People excluded from electoral rolls are assured that they possess a statutory right of appeal. But experiences emerging from West Bengal raise questions about their effectiveness. The Appellate Tribunals established to hear challenges to exclusion are already facing an enormous backlog of several lakhs. As per estimates, it would take decades for these cases to be disposed of.

Besides, who all have the capacity to exercise this right is a big question? How many days of work will a daily wage earner be ready to sacrifice? Will the migrant worker, the elderly Adivasi, the disabled dependent on assistance, and the poor household struggling to assemble documents be able to approach the appellate process from the same position as a well-resourced person?

*Political Context*

This denial of a democratic right cannot be separated from the political context in which the SIR is being imposed. It is this political context that has generated genuine anxiety among Muslims and other marginalized communities who continue to be portrayed by the BJP-RSS as objects of suspicion.

The communal dimension of the present debate cannot, therefore, be understood simply by examining the legal provisions governing the SIR. It has to be located within the political environment in which those provisions are being implemented. Administrative powers that may appear neutral otherwise can produce profoundly unequal consequences when exercised in conditions of communal polarization and unequal access to legal remedies.

The repeated emphasis on documentation, political campaigns questioning the belonging of particular communities, and attempts to redefine citizenship through increasingly intrusive administrative processes are part of a broader political project to reshape the character of the Indian Republic. 

Ambedkars warning was prophetic. In the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1948 he said:

While everybody recognizes the necessity of the diffusion of constitutional morality for the peaceful working of a democratic constitution, there are two things interconnected with it that are not, unfortunately, generally recognized. One is that the form of administration has a close connection with the form of the Constitution. The form of the administration must be appropriate to and in the same sense as the form of the Constitution. The other is that it is perfectly possible to pervert the Constitution without changing its form by merely changing the form of the administration and to make it inconsistent and opposed to the spirit of the Constitution. 

That the Constitution can be subverted even without a Nuremberg like law is being established.

*Vande Mataram is Not the Litmus Test for Nationalism*

The RSS-BJP combine is always on the lookout for issues that sow communal divisiveness among the general public rather than fostering a sense of unity. 'Vande Mataram' is one such issue. Those who far from singing Vande Mataram never even uttered the slogan during the freedom struggle, and whose lips always voiced only "Namaste Sada Vatsale Matribhume," suddenly positioned themselves as the staunchest supporters of Vande Mataram after independence. They raised the slogan: "If you want to live in India, you must say "Vande Mataram." Twelve years after coming to power, they have now orchestrated a new charade : singing all six stanzas of Vande Mataram, a process that takes over three minutes. Flexing their parliamentary muscle, they even pushed a law through Parliament placing Vande Mataram on par with the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The reality is that the law itself imposes no obligation to sing Vande Mataram let alone all six stanzas. However, through executive directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the threat of punishment is being used to coerce people into singing the entire song. Refusing to comply with these directives, the Congress party has decided to sing only the first two stanzas as was the practice previously in keeping with the secular and inclusive spirit of the national movement. The RSS-BJP is rattled by this decision, as it sees its campaign for communal polarization failing.

The true intention of the Sangh-BJP is to replace Jana Gana Mana with Vande Mataram. It has never respected either Babasahebs Constitution or Rabindranath Tagores Jana Gana Mana. Had it truly respected the Constitution, it would not have trifled with constitutional concepts and values. Our Constituent Assembly had adopted Jana Gana Mana as the national anthem only after careful deliberation. This discourse involved not only Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru but also the 'Iron Man' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who had imposed a ban on the RSS. They all supported Jana Gana Mana because the poem reflects an 'Idea of India' that acknowledges diversity and the spirit of inclusivity, embracing people of all religions Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, etc. as well as all languages and regions. The Sangh, which thrives on the fertilizer and water of communal hatred, detests the very concept of the 'Idea of India.' That is precisely why it also loathes Jana Gana Mana. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker walking out midway during the singing of the National Anthem is a manifestation of this attitude. The BJP government ought to be the first to register a case against this individual for insulting the National Anthem and the National Flag. If the Sangh-BJP's patriotism were truly genuine, they would have enacted a law mandating the singing of the full verses of Jana Gana Mana rather than Vande Mataram.

No community in our country has ever objected to singing the original two verses of Vande Mataram. Among the lakhs of people who laid down their lives while singing it and raising slogans during the freedom struggle, not a single one belonged to the 'Sanghi' Gang. These two verses present a magnificent image of an India that is 'Sujalam-Suphalam' (rich in water and fertile). However, it is an established and verified fact of literary history that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the remaining verses of Vande Mataram much later for his novel Anand Math and appended them to the poem. These verses constitute a hymn and an invocation to the Goddess-power (Devi-Shakti) for the massacre of Muslims. Due to its communal undertones, the novel and the verses added later have always been controversial ; the people of our country never accepted them during the anti-colonial struggle. Therefore, this was not merely a matter of opposition by the Muslim community, as the Sangh-BJP is propagating. In fact, it was Acharya Kripalani who first questioned the suitability of this song. Thus, Jana Gana Mana represents our anti-colonial nationalism, whereas the later verses of Vande Mataram represent the communal nationalism that the RSS-BJP has championed since its very inception.

Today, the Sangh is attempting to impose this very communal nationalism upon the people of the country. This is why it is bent on making Vande Mataram the litmus test of patriotism ; by intimidating the minority community and driving home the message that they have been reduced to second-class citizens, it seeks to appease its Hindutva supporters and push the nation towards becoming a 'Hindu Rashtra' through communal polarization.

It is also important to note the historical fact that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee served as a Deputy Magistrate under British rule. During a period when freedom fighters across the country were facing the wrath of the British, Bankim was a favorite of the British authorities ; this was because his work, Anandamath, served British interests by driving a communal wedge among the public. The RSS was engaged in precisely the same activity during the freedom movement. In 1942, when the entire nation was battling British rule with the spirit of "Do or Die," the Sanghi Giroh led by the "Maafiveer" (apologist) Savarkar was urging the country's youth to enlist in the British imperial army, raising slogans like "Hinduize the nation and militarize Hindutva." It is evident that both Bankim Chandra and the RSS were pro-British and anti-Muslim in character. This explains the immense affection the Sangh harbors for Bankim Chandra.

Neither during the freedom movement nor after independence has the Sangh ever felt any affinity for the Constitution or national symbols. They dismissed the Constitution drafted and adopted by the Constituent Assembly under Ambedkars leadership as being inspired by foreign concepts and demanded the implementation of the Manusmriti in its place. They labeled the three colors of the Tricolour inauspicious and demanded the adoption of the saffron flag. They also object to the Ashoka Chakra on the national flag, claiming it reeks of imperialism. But which imperialism? After all, they passionately love British and now American imperialism. The reference here is to Emperor Ashokas Buddhist empire, which stood defiantly against Brahminism ; this history is precisely why the Sangh harbors deep-seated hatred for Ashoka and his Chakra a symbol interpreted as representing love, equality, and brotherhood. This hatred runs so deep that the facial expressions of the lions on the Ashoka Pillar atop the Parliament building were distorted so much so that they appear contrary to the original masterpiece. Consequently, for the RSS-BJP combine and it's affiliated organisations, symbols like the Tricolour and Vande Mataram do not represent patriotism ; rather, they serve as tools to exploit the patriotic sentiments of the people for their own communal interests. Were this not the case, the Sanghi Giroh would never have dared to hold a rally waving the Tricolour in support of the rapists involved in the infamous 2018 Kathua case.

The Sangh-BJP is stoking this controversy at a time when 'Gen-Z' is agitating over the fundamental issues facing the public. This movement has tarnished the 'all-powerful' image that the Sangh aided by 'Godi Media' had cultivated over the past 12 years, and the Modi government's policies are facing stiff challenges both inside and outside Parliament. Their only tried-and-tested method to escape this predicament is to draw even more aggressively from their communal quiver. But perhaps this cunning strategy will no longer work. After all, mass solidarity rooted in people's struggles has always proven to be far greater and stronger than any form of communal mobilization. This is both a lesson and a legacy of our anti-imperialist struggle something with which the Sangh clique has absolutely no connection.

*Withdraw the proposed UPI Charges*

The Modi governments move to impose charges on UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions is an attack on ordinary people. On August 6, the government passed the bill in the Lok Sabha to allow charges on payments made through UPI apps.

This bill was passed without hearing the views of the opposition and without any debate. It was pushed through by voice vote in an authoritarian manner. Through this amendment, the government is punishing ordinary people by collecting charges from them and handing over the benefits to corporates.

*Impact on Common People*

The rulers claim that the charges will only be collected from the merchants. But in practice, any charge levied on the merchants will ultimately fall on the heads of ordinary people.

As part of the Taxation and Other Laws Amendment Bill, 2026, the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 was amended. Until now, there was a law that prohibited charging fees on UPI transactions. On August 6, the government changed that law. Now, if the government decides, charges can be imposed. Initially, reports suggest that only UPI transactions above 2,000 will attract charges of 0.30.5%.

*Digital Push*

On November 8, 2016, demonetisation was announced. The Union government claimed it would eliminate black money, corruption, and counterfeit notes. In reality, none of these problems were resolved. At the same time, the Union government pushed the people towards digitalisation, including UPI, promising that no charges would ever be imposed. That assurance led to mass adoption; however difficult it was in the initial days.

*Massive Growth*

UPI transactions grew exponentially and have been growing rapidly on a daily basis. In November 2016, in one month there were hardly 3,00,000 transactions worth 100 crore. In July 2026, this had grown to 2,366 crore transactions worth 30 lakh crore in value in a single month. This means about 79 crore transactions per day worth 1 lakh crore. Between August 2025 and July 2026, there were 24,000 crore transactions worth 330 lakh crore.

*Foreign Corporate Dominance*

The key question is who controls these transactions? Foreign corporates dominate. US based Walmart-owned PhonePe handles 50%, US based Google Pay handles 33%. Together, these two foreign corporations control 83% of UPI transactions. On the other hand, public sector bank apps like SBI Pay, PNB Pay, and Baroda M Pay barely exist in the market. Collectively, all public sector apps account for less than 1% both in number and volume. This is the design of the Modi government which is determined to develop digital payments only through foreign corporates.

*RBIs Failure to Check Monopoly*

Complaints were raised before the Reserve Bank of India about monopoly control of UPI transactions by two foreign companies. In November 2020, RBI through NPCI issued a guideline that no single company should exceed 30% of UPI transactions. But in practice, PhonePe and Google Pay continue to violate this guideline. RBI has not taken any action to restrict this monopoly; instead, it has deferred enforcement of this guideline repeatedly, now to January 2027. This exposes the utter failure of RBI to check the monopoly of foreign corporates in UPI service and reflects the BJP governments servile attitude to US imperialism.

*1.2 Lakh Crore Fee Loot*

Currently, monthly UPI transactions are worth 30 lakh crore. About 65% of these transactions in volume (20 lakh crore) are above 2,000, as per an estimate. At 0.5% MDR, the UPI charges would work out to 10,000 crore per month, and 1.2 lakh crore annually. Even at 0.3%, it would be 6,000 crore per month, and 72,000 crore annually. The main beneficiaries would be PhonePe and Google Pay, which control 83% of the total volume of UPI transactions. 

*Modi Governments Policy*

In FY202526, State Bank of India customers alone accounted for 20% of UPI transactions both in number and volume. But SBIs own app, SBI Pay, contributed hardly 0.5%. An overwhelming majority of SBI customers use PhonePe or Google Pay. Thus, despite nationalist rhetoric, the Modi governments policy has effectively promoted US based foreign corporates, presumably under US pressure.

*Could they reduce Cash Circulation?*

One stated goal of demonetisation and digital push was to reduce cash circulation. In November 2016, 18 lakh crore was in circulation, of which 15.5 lakh crore was demonetised. By January 2017, the total money circulation was pegged at 9 lakh crore after remonetisation of 6.5 lakh crore. It was claimed by the rulers that it was ideal to keep money circulation at that level comparing many advanced capitalist countries. But today, cash circulation has crossed 42 lakh crore. A major reason for this is rampant corruption and black money. A large amount of cash is hoarded and not returned for circulation. 

Another reason that contributes to the increased money circulation to a certain extent is the poor digital adoption due to lack of electricity, internet and insufficient telecommunication towers in many rural and hilly areas. This again clearly exposes the increased economic divide among the people. The Modi Government, which has failed in many aspects, has failed in curtailing money circulation also.

*Withdraw the Fee Loot*

The Modi government, in order to benefit the corporatesespecially foreign ones, has amended the law to impose charges on UPI. There is a clear move on the part of the Union Government to loot thousands of crores of rupees from the ordinary people through this amendment. The government must withdraw this amendment immediately, or the people will force it to.

* Oschadbank claims it suffered substantial losses following Russias military actions and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

* The claim is reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars. 

* The case is being heard under the 1998 RussiaUkraine Bilateral Investment Treaty.

* The arbitration tribunal will have three members.

* Dyalá Jiménez, a Costa Rican arbitrator and former trade minister, will serve as the tribunals president after being jointly selected by both sides.

* Stavros Brekoulakis, a Greek arbitrator and National University of Singapore professor, was selected by Oschadbank.
